A sad day for the First Amendment

By a vote of 218-209, the House just passed HR 513, the 527 Reform Act. It is an extension of the McCain-Feingold Political Speech Repression Act, and only came up for a vote because the Republican Party was outflanked by the Dems in effective use of 527s after McCain-Feingold passed.

Republicans who supported this muzzling of free speech as some sort of "consistency" should be embarrassed. Jefferson and Madison would be shaking their heads in disgust.

I wish it hadn't been so easy to predict that this 21st century Sedition Act would pass.

(You can read my detailed comments on the debate leading up to the vote HERE.)

Here are the Republicans who voted for Freedom of Speech. They should be congratulated:

Bartlett (MD)
Chocola
Flake
Fossella
Franks (AZ)
Garrett (NJ)
Gohmert
Hensarling
Istook
Jones (NC)
King (IA)
Mack
McMorris
Neugebauer
Paul
Pence
Shadegg
Westmoreland

Did the entire Colorado Republican delegation vote for this bill? For shame...

    527 Odds and Ends
Mary Katharine Ham provides some quotable quotes during the 527 debate. Rossputin calls this a sad day for the First Amendment. Robert Bluey calls Roy Blunt the First 527 Hypocrite....
