Americans are not anti-immigrant

Ruben Navarrette Jr.’s accusation that Americans are anti-immigrant simply doesn’t hold water. When is the last time you saw a Senate Committee pass a bill that they thought would hurt its members’ political futures?

Members of both parties cooperated to get a bill through the Senate Judiciary Committee…a bill which some truly anti-immigrant people call “amnesty” or “weak”. And clearly whatever comes out of the House will not be so lenient. But nevertheless, the Senate’s actions represent their realization that Americans understand the value of immigrants to our economy and in the historical development of our country.

However, even pro-immigrant Republicans like me bridle at the site of immigrants defiantly exclaiming their loyalty to Mexico, refusing to speak English, and waving Mexican flags while simultaneously demanding “rights” from the USA. They can’t have it both ways. I welcome immigrants (and would welcome much more legal immigration) and I value their contribution. But I have little use for those protestors whose clear intention is to drain America while never becoming American.
