The editors of the Hamshahri newspaper in Tehran have taken hypocrisy to a new level. In reaction to the Prophet Mohammed cartoon, the newspaper plans to sponsor a holocaust cartoon “to test whether the West will apply the principle of freedom of expression to the Nazi genocide against Jews as it did to the caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.” What exactly is their point? Do they want to know if they can offend others the way they feel offended? More likely, they just want to strike out at the world by exploiting one of history’s worst tragedies. This veiled attack, on Jews specifically and the West in general, illustrates the double standard on which the violent Muslim protestors base their thoughts and actions. A mind that compares an insult of religious beliefs to the genocide of millions of people has serious problems, but even if one could rationalize equating the magnitude of the two, engaging in the same behavior makes no sense. If the contest goes forward, some may protest and many will take offense, but none will burn down Iranian embassies because that behavior has no place in a civilized society.
