I understand that Governor Owens could and probably should put policy ahead of party; it is reasonable for him to be willing to sign good and meaningful legislation even if it lessens the potency of the immigration issue for Republicans at election time.

But giving the Democrats a massive political victory by going along with bills which do essentially nothing for the state and does not address the original issue of allowing Coloradoans to vote on an immigration bill with teeth is truly hard to fathom.

I can imagine most Republicans in the state legislature feeling as if a tornado hit them. The Supreme Court's decision to throw out Initiative 55 gave the GOP a powerful political issue in November. By caving in on what many thought were fundamental Republican principles for the second year in a row, Bill Owens has done more damage to his party than any Democrat ever could have. And he did it without getting anything of real substance done. Andrew Romanoff, Federico Pena, and other Democrat leaders and supporters of illegal immigrants must be gleefully stunned today while Republican voters are more disheartened than ever.

well our republican policies wont last long if we are unable to put the issues out for voters to consider.

Well said, Ross. I don't think Shawn Mitchell was too far off when he called Owens the Bill Clinton of Colorado. I waited all day to post on the matter, until last night and the American League won the All-Star Game, so I wouldn't be in a foul mood and write something I might regret.

Governor Owens has turned out not to be a friend of Reps. or Dems. He is not a friend to technical education in Colorado, nor is he a friend to teachers based on his fallacious assumptions about PERA, State employees retirement plan. The Gov. has been a real disappointment to many republicans in Colorado. Some believe he has his nose up Busch's whatcha callit trying to get some sort of appointment after he's out of office.
