re "Court undermines citizen ballot right" (Rocky Mountain News editorial, 6/13/06)

To the Editor:
The blatantly political decision by the Colorado Supreme Court to remove the Defend Colorado Now initiative is a win-win situation for Republicans.
The recent special election in California shows the power of the immigration issue, particularly its ability to hurt Democrats. If the measure had been allowed on the ballot, it would have brought out voters who would also be likely to vote Republican. With it off the ballot, the state GOP now has a tremendously powerful issue in November. You can already hear the campaign ads: “Look how Democrats are spending your tax dollars on illegal immigrants”, possibly with a not-too-subtle reminder of Officer Donny Young’s death.
Despite Democrats generally wanting to implement only the softest of measures to curb illegal immigration, they must be truly frightened of the ramifications of the Supreme Court’s obvious contempt for the will of the people.

I wholeheartedly agree with your analysis. So does Peter Blake - check out his column from this morning.
This erroneous decision not only raises the profile of immigration enforcement and "judicial activism" further - a bonus for the GOP - it also has strong potential to unify and expand the base heading into the fall election.
Let's hope the good guys do the right thing here.

Now, the fact the even Dick Lamm agrees that his ballot initiative will do nothing, add tons on unneeded bureaucracy, and end up costing more money to police then the state spends now doesn't seem to matter to you all, does it?
Heck, facts never do.
The FACTS are that the GOP controlled Colorado for 30 years, and left it in shambles. The Dems fixed the budget in 2 years, and passed more immigration related legislation in the '06 session then the GOP could in 30 years.

Forgot to add...
Democrats: Promises made, promises kept.

I'm not even from Colorado, I know nothing about the content of the initiative, yet I'm still offended by pacified's condescending and paternalistic tone.
He completely misses the point. It's about voters having a say, not about whether the ballot initiative is a good idea or not. And Ross' point was that the Supreme Court's decision was politically motivated and would serve the GOP well.
The contents of the initiative, the cost of its implementation -- none of that was discussed. That pacified brougt it up shows clearly that he's not reading the blog but that he believes he knows better than everybody else.
I'm glad I don't share a state with him.

Pacified,
I don't know what you mean by "fixed the budget". I do know that instead of cutting spending, the Dems (with collaboration with spineless Republicans enthralled with their own power) to dig their hands even deeper into our pockets.
Yes, Democrats often keep their promises. It's just too bad that their promises are to enlarge government at the expense of our financial and political freedom. Stalin kept his promises, too....
