Junk science behind fuel efficiency standards
The title of a Reuters article about President Obama’s new proposed auto fuel efficiency standards, “Obama takes aim at climate-warming car emissions,” is a repetition of the “junk science” behind much of the push by Democrats to regulate anything related to energy.
Data show that:
* Carbon dioxide concentrations lag, and don’t lead, long-term changes in global temperatures, suggesting they are a result and not a cause of those changes.
* The planet has been much warmer (and much cooler) in the past, during times when there was little or no man-made CO2 in the atmosphere.
* CO2 represents less than .04 percent (.0004) of the atmosphere, and only about 2.75% of that is produced by humans.
* The climate models which anti-global-warming alarmists rely on cannot account for the fact that the planet has not warmed in a decade despite an increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations.
The article repeats the same implication that climate change is being primarily caused by man’s activities by stating that “The proposal is aimed at cutting climate-warming carbon emissions, which would fall by 900 million metric tons or more than 30 percent over the life of the program.” That sentence also erroneously states that 900 million metric tons of CO2 over the roughly decade-long program represents 30 percent (of something). In fact, 900 million tons over a decade would represent less than 8% of automobile gasoline CO2 emissions and only 1.5% of total man-made CO2 emissions.
In other words, President Obama is suggesting costing American car buyers and car producers tens of billions of dollars in retooling expense and in higher automobile prices, reducing Americans’ range of choices in automobile purchases, and forcing us to drive smaller, lighter, less safe vehicles, in order to eliminate from the atmosphere 1.5% of the 2.75% of the CO2 which is generated by humans, with CO2 from all sources making up about .038% of that atmosphere. For those of you without a calculator handy, the Obama plan will, at most, save us from an additional 0.000016 percent of atmospheric CO2 concentration, just over 1/10th part per million. Even if one believed the disproved climate models which the global warming alarmists use, it is absolutely impossible that such a minuscule change in atmospheric CO2 concentrations will have any impact on our planet’s climate.
