Mayhem at Virginia Tech

I would like to make just a couple of short points, or rather predictions, about yesterday's horrific massacre at Virginia Tech University. I think there is more than enough information and discussion out there already, so I don't need or want to spend a lot of time on it.

First, you will hear a lot of crazy speculation and conjecture about the killer, especially if he is not American. Imagine what the anti-immigrant crowd will do if the rumors of his being a foreign national are true.

Second, you will hear a debate about gun control start again, and probably some truly silly bill proposed by a Democrat in Congress. However, you will also hear some talk about the possibility of arming teachers or school administrators to the extent that they are willing to go through intense training and volunteer for the equivalent of an educational air marshall program.

Third, the President of VA Tech, Charles Steger, and the head of campus police, WR Flinchum, will be out of their jobs by the end of the month. And I must say, given their reaction to the first shootings, they probably deserve to be.

Fourth, this is truly an American tragedy. The biggest massacre of innocents, at a school or otherwise, in our history. It's hard to say how or when we'll recover. It makes us all feel less secure, which is the goal of all terrorism. And even though this won't be called terrorism, it's hard to see how it is really anything else.

Charles Steger is a good guy. He may have been poorly counseled.

I love the fact that, when asked point blank about possible changes in security practices, his response what that "we are an open society and we run an open univesity; some things just happen."

The events at VTU, as tragic as they are, rerpresent the price a free people must occasionally pay for their freedom.

You are right Ross. I have heard plenty of people talk about gun control today. It is NOT going to keep guns out of the hands of the crazies and criminals....It really was a senseless crime.
