One for the good guys...couple kills masked intruder

Again, this is way off my usual track but I think it's such a great story I wanted to share it:

A masked man who tried to break into a home in Boulder County died Monday night after the homeowners beat him with a baseball bat and stabbed him with his own knife, Boulder sheriff’s deputies said.

Becci Starr, 59, of 135 Poorman Road, called 911 at 10:25 p.m. Monday, saying she answered her doorbell to find a masked man standing there holding a simulated handgun, according to a report from Lt. Phil West. Starr said she fended off the suspect with a baseball bat, after which he dropped the simulated weapon and produced a knife.

Starr’s husband, Scotte Mattes, 56, was alerted by her screams and ran to help. He tackled the man outside the front door of their home off Sunshine Canyon. During the struggle, Mattes was able to wrest the knife from the man and stab him with it while Starr hit the man with the baseball bat.

Once the intruder no longer posed a threat, Mattes attempted to resuscitate the man, who was declared dead at the scene. Sheriff’s officials, who have not identified the man, described him as being a white male in his late 20’s or early 30’s. The Boulder County Coroner’s Office plans to conduct an autopsy today.

Mattes, who sustained minor injuries during the scuffle, was treated and released at Boulder Community Hospital.

What is the law up there about killing an intruder? In Texas, if you kill him outside your door, you better drag him in the house for a self defense case.

In Virginia it depends on which way he's facing. If he's facing you, you can kill him; if he's running away, you have to let him go.

Most jurisdictions work the same way.
