Just as the discussion over the Wright controversy was, in my opinion, inappropriately tilted toward race (when it should have been anti-Americanism), these comments are being debated with the context of whether or not Obama is an 'elitist'. That is a shallow debate that can be easily parsed to either point of view.
More important is what his comments say about how he feels about gun rights, religion, and other traditional values and the thought processes employed by the people with whom he does not agree.
It's ironic.....People who get bitter cling to religion.....Hmmmmm....Can you say Jeremiah Wright?

Rusty, I think you're right that what his comments say about his values is very important. But don't underestimate the political importance of being painted as an elitist. It's electoral death, esp. in the Midwest.
