The worst sort of "conservative" governing

To the Editors:
As a registered Republican, I continue to be sickened by President Bush's complete misprioritization of an appropriate conservative agenda. Instead of vetoing unconscionable pork like the Transportation Bill, he has presided over the biggest growth of discretionary spending in our history. Now, as a sop to the Christian right, he hopes to make his wasteful ways OK with his religious base by creating a government office to buy them off.
To create an office of faith-based initiatives within the Department of Homeland Security is to invite explicit or implicit discrimination by the Federal government in an area that hardly needs more politicization. Furthermore, while I believe that private organizations should have the right to discriminate, the government clearly does not and must not.
Once again, President Bush has let down those of us who have supported Republicans because we believe in limited government, low taxes, and liberty. It’s unfortunate that the alternative (major) party is even worse on those fundamental American principles.
